We as parent’s of children born with Down Syndrome are all on a different journey and have had to face different difficulties and have celebrated different achievements.
One thing however that we have all had to deal with at some stage on this journey is all of our children being painted with the same brush. Yes all of our children are similar in that they have an extra chromosome, much like people born with green eyes are similar or people born with an affinity for rock music are similar, but the important thing to understand is that this is only a very small part of who they are.
Our children may have an extra chromosome but this does not define them. They are not Down Syndrome. They are not a diagnosis and they are not one in the same.
They are unique individuals, with unique likes, dislikes, quirky personality traits and character traits inherited from their parents, their grandparents and the many generations before them. They are uniquely them.
So this Down Syndrome Day we celebrate people with an extra chromosome, but more than that we celebrate the uniqueness of those born with Down Syndrome, we celebrate their worth, we celebrate their place in the world and we urge one and all to #LOSETHELABEL and see the person behind the diagnosis. Today we celebrate uniqueness.
